Flight Attendant Course

The two hour introduction covers the itinerary to be followed for the seven week course, the types of personality best suited to this career, and areas such as grooming, punctuality and confidence which will assist you in finding a job once you have passed the examination and received your licence.

Training and License for Flight Attendants

The training and the license issued on successful completion of the flight attendant course, is a South African cabin crew license which entitles the holder to operate on South African registered aircraft. Residents of other countries wishing to undergo flight attendant training must ensure:

  • that the South African license and training satisfies the needs and requirements of their relevant Civil Aviation Authority
  • that the South African license can be validated in their country of residency or country of operation.

This course will prepare you for the following:

  • The use and location of different emergency equipment including life jackets, life rafts, evacuation slides, oxygen bottles, fire extinguishers, etc.
  • Emergency Procedures including evacuation, ditching & survival and fire fighting (SEPT)
  • The application of Basic Life Support and CPR (AVMED)
  • The carriage of Dangerous Goods by air and regulations in this regard (DG)
  • Knowledge of Air Law
  • Knowledge of aircraft, their operation and their components
  • Safety and Security policies and procedures
  • Aircraft Type Specific Equipment and procedures
  1. You will be required to sign that you acknowledge, understand and accept the following:
    • Cranfield does not guarantee employment to any student. With its relationship with different operators in the local industry, it will however advise the operators of the availability of trained and licensed cabin crewmembers available for employment. Cranfield may be required to provide reference information regarding student’s personality, attitude, performance and punctuality during training.
    • The terms and conditions with regards to the course fee as well as any other expenses that may be incurred.
    • The requirement to have a medical examination prior to receiving a cabin crew license.
    • The requirements of the company in respect of lecture attendance
    • The standards required to be met in order to successfully complete the course.
  2. You will be required to provide Cranfield with 1 passport photo for airport access purposes.
  3. The full course fee is payable in advance in order to secure a place on a course.
  4. Training takes place over a 6-week period, training sessions will commence at 09h00 Monday to Friday and finish at approx. 16h00. This may vary based to the subject, instructor, availability of aircraft, etc.
  5. Examinations are written on all subjects covered and students will only be eligible to be certified and licensed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) on successful completion of the course, Cranfield examinations and the SACAA examination.

Please take note of the following:

Flight attendant trainees must:

  1. be 18 years or older and have a Matric / Grade 12
  2. be able to swim with a floatation device without panicking
  3. have the right to live and work in South Africa
  4. be able to speak and write excellent English as this is the language of aviation.

There are no height or weight restrictions, however, some operators might have a restrictions on height based on the height of the Cabin. (e.g. there is a restriction on a Jetstream of 1.68m)

Recommendations:

  • To have a cell phone or be contactable at all times
  • A valid passport which allows you to travel without restrictions
  • A valid vehicle driver’s license / a reliable means of getting to work at unusual hours.
  • Tattoos should not be visible on any part of the body.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language

Please Note: This training and the license issued on successful completion of the course, is a South African cabin crew license which entitles the holder to operate on South African registered aircraft.   1. Successful candidates may be required to complete a company specific course which will make them familiar with the Standard Operating Procedures of the particular operator. This is usually conducted by the airline at the expense of the airline.
  2. Flight attendants are required by law to undergo annual recurrent training which is usually paid for and arranged by the airline. When not employed on a full time basis, you will need to pay for this re-currency yourself to maintain the validity of your license.
  3. Airlines provide cabin service training in-house; you will be briefed on how the company would like you to serve drinks, meals, provide towels and any other service related aspects.
  4. You are required to undergo a Line Indoctrination Flight and Flight Deck Observation Flight before commencement of duties as a flight attendant. This will be conducted by the company that employs you.
  1. Cabin Crew Abinitio Course - 6 week course @ R15,000:
  2. The course fee excludes the following:
    • the Class 2 Aviation Medical
    • the License Fee (approx. R 300.00) payable to the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) on completion of the SACAA exam
    • Swimming lessons
    • Accommodation
